How to choose outdoor seeds
Filter by region tag first; it's the single most useful thing on the page. Within your region, decide between a photoperiod strain (bigger plant, one harvest in autumn, more weather exposure) and an autoflower (smaller, faster, less exposure, a second run possible in the north). Then think about the actual site. A north-facing bed against a wall with a hedge for wind protection can grow almost anything; an exposed hillside section wants a compact strain and a stake; a spot that stays damp in autumn needs a mould-resistant one. Check expected height against your privacy and your wind — anything over 1.5 metres on an exposed site needs serious support. In the far north, choose by whether the strain finishes before the February humidity; in the deep south, by whether it finishes before the April frost.
Growing cannabis outdoors in New Zealand
Outdoor growing here is generous in sun and stingy in time: the season is short, the light is intense, and the weather can turn in an afternoon. Shelter is the first decision and the one most guides written elsewhere ignore. Start plants in dappled shade with some wind exposure so stems thicken, and move them into full sun over a week.

Plant in the ground where you can — roots reach cooler, damper soil and plants grow larger — or use 40-litre-plus fabric pots. Mulch 5 to 10 cm deep except where drainage is already a problem. Stake at planting, not after the first gale. Inspect for caterpillars and slugs from mid-summer and for rot from early March.

When is the best time to plant cannabis outdoors in New Zealand?
Germinate from October and plant out after the last frost — Labour Weekend in most regions, mid-November in the deep south. Autoflowers can go in any time from October to January.
How do I protect plants from wind?
Choose a sheltered site, stake early with soft ties, and consider a windbreak of shade cloth or planting behind a hedge or fence. Compact strains and autoflowers cope far better than tall sativas in exposed spots.
How big do outdoor plants get in New Zealand?
Photoperiod strains planted in late October can reach two metres or more by March in the north with good soil and sun; less in the south. Autoflowers stay under a metre. Check the expected height on each listing.
Do I need to water every day in summer?
Rarely, outside of a dry spell in Gisborne, Hawke's Bay or Central Otago. In the ground with mulch, deep watering once or twice a week is usually enough. Check by pushing a finger into the soil; water when it's dry 5 cm down.
What pests should I expect outdoors?
Slugs and snails on seedlings, caterpillars from mid-summer, aphids, and spider mites in dry heat. Inspect daily from February. Most are manageable with hand removal, neem oil or a Bt spray for caterpillars; catching them early is what matters.
Can I grow outdoors year-round anywhere in New Zealand?
Not reliably. The far north can manage a late-autumn autoflower run, but growth slows badly below 10°C at night. Elsewhere the outdoor season runs late October to April; winter grows need to move indoors. ---
