Cannabis seed collection
Cannabis seeds for the South Island short season
Canterbury, Otago, Southland and the West Coast share a season that starts late, ends early and can drop close to freezing on a clear March night. This range is curated for the South Island and the cooler inland North Island — early-finishing indicas, fast-version hybrids and autoflowers that go from seed to harvest in ten weeks, all with the cold tolerance to keep growing when the nights turn crisp. These strains stay compact, resist the damp of cool autumn mornings, and finish in March rather than waiting for an April that brings frost instead of warmth. Central Otago growers get the bonus of dry heat and intense sun in summer, which these genetics use well; Canterbury and the Coast get strains that shrug off a nor'wester or a week of rain. Many are also the easiest strains in our catalogue.

How to choose seeds for the South Island
Flowering weeks is the number to filter by: 7 to 8 for Southland, Central Otago and the alpine valleys; up to 9 for Christchurch, Nelson and Marlborough. Within that, indica-dominant strains and their hybrids are the natural fit — they finish faster, stay compact, and the cold nights of a southern autumn bring out purple colours and preserve terpenes. Autoflowers are the safest option of all because they remove the finishing-time gamble; sow in mid-November and harvest in early February in peak sun. Avoid long-flowering sativas unless you have a greenhouse. On the West Coast, where cool meets wet, add the mould-resistance filter; in Central Otago, where cool meets dry heat and intense UV, the dense resinous strains do exceptionally well if they finish in time.
Growing cannabis in the South Island
Extend the season at both ends. Germinate indoors in October under a window or a small LED, pot on once, and harden seedlings off for a week before planting out after the last frost — mid-November in most of the south, later inland. A cold frame or small polytunnel adds three to four weeks of growth in spring and protects flowering plants from an early autumn frost; in Southland it's close to essential. Choose the warmest microclimate you have — north-facing, against a brick or stone wall that radiates heat at night, sheltered from the nor'wester.
| Region | Last frost | Plant out | Harvest by | Best types |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nelson, Marlborough | Late October | Early November | Early April | 8–9 week feminised; autos |
| Christchurch, Canterbury Plains | Early–mid November | Mid–late November | End of March | 8-week feminised; autos |
| Central Otago | Mid–late November | Late November | Mid–late March | Fast feminised; dense strains thrive in dry heat |
| Dunedin, Southland | Late November | Late Nov–early Dec | Mid-March | Autos; 7-week fast versions; greenhouse |
| West Coast | Early November | Mid-November | Mid-March | Mould-resistant fast strains; autos |
Feed a little more generously than in warm regions; cool soil slows nutrient uptake. Water less — cool weather and short days mean plants use far less than the same plant in Gisborne. Watch overnight temperatures in March: below 8°C flowering slows noticeably, and a forecast frost means covering plants with a sheet at dusk or harvesting a few days early.

Frequently asked questions
Can cannabis survive frost?
Light frost damages leaves and a hard frost can kill a plant, especially in flower. Plant out after the last spring frost — mid-November in much of the South Island — and if autumn frost threatens before harvest, cover overnight or harvest slightly early.
When should I plant in Canterbury or Otago?
Germinate indoors in October and transplant outside from mid-to-late November once frost risk has passed. Choose strains that finish by mid-March, or use autoflowers planted in November for a February harvest.
Do cool climates affect potency or yield?
Cool nights in flower bring out purple colours and preserve terpenes, and yields are fine if the strain finishes in time. The risk is unfinished plants and early frost or rot, which is why early-finishing genetics matter more here than anywhere.
Is a greenhouse worth it in the South Island?
Yes, more than anywhere else in New Zealand. A simple polytunnel adds a month to each end of the season, keeps autumn rain off flowering colas and protects against frost. Ventilate on warm days; a closed tunnel in December sun overheats fast, and Central Otago sun is fierce.
Why do my plants turn purple in autumn?
Cool nights trigger anthocyanin production in strains with the genetics for it. It's harmless and often prized. If purpling comes with leaf drop and slowed growth, the plant may be too cold; if it's just colour, enjoy it.
Can I grow sativas in Otago or Southland?
Only fast-flowering sativa hybrids or sativa-leaning autoflowers. A traditional 12-week sativa flipped in mid-February won't finish before May, by which point frost will have ended the season. ---
