How to choose regular seeds
Decide first whether you're growing or breeding. If you just want flower and are happy to sex plants, choose regular seeds the way you'd choose feminised — by region fit, flowering time and structure — and plan to start twice as many seeds as the plants you want to finish. If you're breeding, look for strains described as stable or true-breeding and note the lineage: crossing two very different parents gives variable offspring, which is what you want for selection but not for consistency. Growing regular seeds in New Zealand
Regular plants grow exactly like feminised ones until sexing, which happens naturally at four to six weeks from seed. Check the nodes daily from week four: females show pairs of fine white hairs, males show small round balls like tiny bunches of grapes. Remove males the day you spot them unless you're breeding — one open male flower in a nor'wester can pollinate every female in the valley.

If you're breeding outdoors, isolate the male by distance or bring it indoors and collect pollen in a paper bag.
