How to choose autoflower seeds
With autos, the seed-to-harvest number on the listing is the whole story: a 9-week auto sown on 25 October is harvested in the last week of December. Use that to plan. Next, look at height and structure — most autos finish between 60 and 100 cm, and the shorter ones are the right choice for windy sites. Pot size matters more for autos than any other plant because they can't recover lost time; 15 to 25 litres, in the ground or in fabric pots, is the sweet spot. In the humid north, choose an auto with a mould-resistance note and time it to finish before the February humidity. In the south, choose the fastest strains and sow as soon as frost risk passes. Modern autos in this range match their photoperiod parents for potency; the old "weak auto" reputation is a decade out of date.
Growing autoflowers in New Zealand
Autos ignore the calendar, which turns New Zealand's short season into a scheduling problem you can actually solve. The one rule that matters: never transplant. Sow directly into the final pot, put it in the sunniest sheltered spot you have, and don't top or train heavily in the first three weeks — autos have a fixed lifespan, and every day of stress is growth you won't get back.

Feed lightly. Autos are small plants with short lives and burn easily; start nutrients at quarter strength in week three and never exceed half strength in flower. Water when the pot feels light, not on a schedule — in a wet spring that may mean not at all for a week.

How long do autoflowers take from seed to harvest?
Most finish in 8 to 11 weeks from germination regardless of daylight, which is why they suit New Zealand's short season so well. An October sowing is typically harvested by mid-January.
Can I get two autoflower harvests in a New Zealand summer?
In Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne, yes — sow in October and again in late December. In the South Island, one run timed to finish before the autumn rain is the safer plan.
Do autoflowers yield less than photoperiod plants?
Per plant, usually, because they're smaller. But they finish before the weather risk that costs so many Kiwi growers their photoperiod crop, and two runs in the north closes the gap entirely.
Can I top or train autoflowers?
Gently, and early. Low-stress training from week two works well and is useful on windy sites to keep plants low. Topping is riskier because autos have no time to recover; only top vigorous plants before day 21, and skip it on 8-week strains.
What pot size do autoflowers need?
