CBD cannabis seeds in New Zealand
CBD seeds grow into cannabis plants with a high cannabidiol content and low THC, for growers who want the flavour, the garden and the ritual with a clearer, milder experience. The range runs from balanced 1:1 strains through to CBD-dominant varieties with very little THC, in feminised and autoflower form. They grow exactly like any other cannabis plant — same sun, same season, same care — and several of the CBD-rich strains here are notably tough, with open structures that shrug off Auckland humidity and Wellington wind. Every listing shows the typical CBD and THC percentages and the ratio, so you can pick a profile that suits you, and the region tags show where each strain finishes comfortably within the season.

How to choose CBD seeds
The ratio is the first decision. A 1:1 strain (say 8% CBD, 8% THC) has a clear but softer effect than a THC strain; a 2:1 or 3:1 is milder still; 20:1 and beyond is functionally non-intoxicating. Pick the ratio for the experience you want, then choose by the same growing criteria as any other strain: region tags, flowering weeks, height, wind tolerance. CBD strains vary a lot in how they've been bred — some are hemp crosses with a leafy, open structure and a herbal flavour that happen to be very tough in wind and damp; others are CBD versions of classic strains that keep the original terpenes and denser flowers. The listing tells you which. Autoflower CBD strains are the easiest entry point: fast, compact and forgiving.
Growing CBD seeds in New Zealand
CBD plants need everything a THC plant needs — sun, drainage, shelter, steady water — and they follow the same calendar. One difference worth knowing: CBD content tends to peak slightly earlier than THC, and harvesting at the "mostly cloudy, few amber" trichome stage preserves the ratio best. Leaving a CBD plant to go heavily amber shifts the balance and dulls the flavour. That earlier harvest is also convenient in a country where March rain is the enemy.
| Region | Recommended type | Plant out | Harvest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northland, Auckland, BoP | Open-structured hemp-cross CBD, or CBD autos for January | Mid-October | Early March / December |
| Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Nelson | Any; dense CBD strains do well in the sun | Late October | Late March |
| Wellington, Manawatū, Taranaki | Compact hemp-cross CBD; stake well | Early November | Late March–early April |
| Canterbury, Otago, Southland | CBD autos or early-finishing CBD feminised | Mid–late November | Mid-March / February |
Feed CBD hemp-cross strains lightly; they're often less hungry than heavy THC hybrids and yellow quickly when overfed. Dry and cure exactly as you would any cannabis — terpene retention matters even more when the effect is subtle.

Frequently asked questions
Will CBD strains get you high?
CBD-dominant strains with very low THC produce little to no intoxicating effect. Balanced 1:1 strains have a noticeable but softer effect than high-THC varieties. Check the ratio on each listing.
Are CBD seeds easier to grow than THC seeds?
Difficulty comes from a strain's genetics, not its cannabinoid profile. Many CBD strains are hemp-derived crosses with sturdy, open structures that handle wind and damp well, but they need the same light, water and care as any cannabis plant.
Is it legal to grow CBD cannabis in New Zealand?
CBD-rich cannabis plants are treated as cannabis under the Misuse of Drugs Act; home cultivation isn't currently permitted regardless of THC content. Licensed industrial hemp and the medicinal cannabis scheme are separate frameworks. See our legal guide for the current position.
What does a CBD:THC ratio like 20:1 mean?
Twenty parts CBD to one part THC by percentage — for example 15% CBD and under 1% THC. The higher the first number, the less intoxicating the strain. A 1:1 ratio means roughly equal amounts.
Can I grow CBD and THC strains together?
Yes. They're the same species and grow identically. The only caution is for breeders: keep pollen from a THC male away from CBD females, or the offspring lose the ratio.
When should I harvest a CBD strain?
Slightly earlier than a THC strain — when most trichomes are cloudy and only a few have turned amber. This preserves the ratio and flavour, and in New Zealand it usually means harvesting before the worst of the autumn rain. ---
