Feminised cannabis seeds in New Zealand
Feminised cannabis seeds give New Zealand growers the one thing a short season can't afford to waste: certainty. Every seed is bred to produce a female plant, so there's no sexing in December, no males to pull, and every pot you fill is a pot that flowers. When your window runs from late October to April and the autumn rain sets the deadline, that matters. This range has been selected for Kiwi conditions — strong sun, sudden wind, humid northern summers and cool southern nights — with photoperiod genetics that plant out after Labour Weekend and finish from March. You'll find classic strains alongside CBD-rich and high-THC varieties, and every listing shows the sativa/indica balance, flowering time, expected height and which regions the strain suits, so you can choose for Whangārei or Dunedin rather than for a climate you don't have.

How to choose feminised seeds
Start with your finish date. Every listing shows flowering weeks; count forward from when your plants will begin flowering (early to mid-February in most of New Zealand) and check the harvest lands before your region's autumn rain settles in. Then look at structure and height: dense indica-dominant strains yield heavily in dry, sheltered spots but rot in a humid Auckland March, while airy sativa-leaning hybrids do the opposite; and anything over 1.5 metres on an exposed site becomes a sail in an equinox gale. The region tags on each product do this filtering for you. If your site is windy, favour compact strains with thick stems and plan to stake. Decide on effect and flavour last, once you've narrowed the list to strains that will actually finish in your conditions.
Growing feminised seeds in New Zealand
Photoperiod feminised strains follow the sun: they grow vegetatively through the long days of late spring and summer and switch to flower as daylight drops below roughly 13 hours in February. That gives you a shorter vegetative window than Australian growers get and a flowering period that runs straight into autumn, which is why timing and strain choice differ so much between the far north and the deep south.
| Region | Plant out | Flowering starts | Harvest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty | Mid-October | Early February | Mid-March–April |
| Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay | Late October (Labour Weekend) | February | Late March–April |
| Wellington, Manawatū, Nelson | Late October–early November | Mid-February | April |
| Canterbury, Otago, Southland, West Coast | Mid–late November | Mid-February | Late March–mid April; frost risk |
Germinate indoors three weeks before your plant-out date, harden seedlings off in dappled shade with some wind exposure, and transplant with the root ball level with the soil. Stake at planting rather than after the first gale. Water deeply and infrequently; in a wet spring, drainage matters more than watering. Feminised plants stressed by cold snaps, wind damage or erratic watering can occasionally throw male flowers, so inspect for pollen sacs in the first three weeks of flowering.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between feminised and regular seeds?
Feminised seeds grow into female plants almost every time, which is what produces flower. Regular seeds are roughly half male, half female, so you'll need to identify and remove the males unless you're breeding. For most home grows, feminised is the practical choice.
Can feminised seeds turn hermaphrodite?
Rarely, and almost always from stress — light leaks, heat spikes, wind damage or erratic watering. Stable genetics and steady conditions keep the risk very low. If you spot pollen sacs among the pistils, remove that plant early.
When should I plant feminised seeds outdoors in New Zealand?
Germinate from October and plant out once frost risk has passed — Labour Weekend is the traditional marker in most regions, later in the deep south. Plants flower as days shorten from February and finish between March and May depending on strain and region.
How are feminised seeds made?
Breeders treat a female plant so it produces pollen carrying only female genetics, then use that pollen on another female. The seeds have no male chromosome, so they grow into females. It's a breeding technique, not genetic modification.
Do feminised plants yield less than plants from regular seeds?
No. Yield comes from the strain's genetics and your conditions, not from whether the seed was feminised. The advantage is that every plant you grow contributes to the harvest instead of half being males you remove.
Can I clone a feminised plant?
Yes. Cuttings from a feminised plant are genetically identical females, and cloning is the standard way to keep a favourite going. Take cuttings in vegetative growth, before flowering begins, for the best rooting rates. ---
