Cannabis seeds for wind and changeable weather
Wellington, the Manawatū, Taranaki, the Wairarapa and the Kāpiti and Hawke's Bay coasts share a climate that's kind for most of the season and brutal for a few days of it: a nor'wester that flattens anything over a metre tall, a cold southerly in December, and rain that can arrive any month. This range is built for wind and changeable weather — compact, sturdy genetics with strong stems and short internodes, hybrids that finish before the equinox gales, and autoflowers that stay low enough to sit behind a fence or a flax hedge. These strains handle the swing from 28°C to 12°C in a day without stalling, and they've been chosen for structure as much as potency. Every listing notes wind tolerance and expected height, with tips on staking and shelter that make the difference in an exposed Wellington section.

How to choose seeds for windy, temperate sites
Height and stem strength first. Look for compact or medium-height strains with a wind-tolerance note, short internodes and a bushy rather than lanky habit; indica-dominant hybrids and autoflowers are the natural fit. If you want sativa effects, choose a sativa-leaning hybrid and plan to top and train it low and wide rather than growing a tall pure sativa. Then check flowering weeks: the equinox gales in late March are when heavy colas snap, so a strain that finishes in mid-March avoids the worst of it. Changeable weather also means humid spells, so a mould-resistance note is worth having even though this isn't the humid north. If your site is genuinely exposed — a hillside section facing the strait — autoflowers under a metre, staked, behind shade cloth, are the realistic choice.
Growing cannabis in Wellington and the windy centre
Shelter is the whole game. Site plants on the north side of the house, behind a fence, hedge or purpose-built windbreak of 50% shade cloth on posts; a windbreak that filters wind works better than a solid wall that creates turbulence. Stake at planting with a stake taller than the expected height and tie loosely with soft ties every 20 cm as the plant grows. Low-stress training from week three keeps the plant wide and low, which both reduces wind load and increases yield.
| Condition | Response |
|---|---|
| Nor'wester forecast | Check ties; add a second stake on the windward side; move pots against a wall |
| Cold southerly in Dec–Jan | Cover young plants overnight; growth stalls but resumes |
| Equinox gales (late March) | Harvest any cola that's mostly cloudy; stake and cage the rest |
| Exposed hillside | Autoflowers under 1 m; shade-cloth windbreak; fabric pots you can move |
| Humid spell | Strip lower growth; check colas; water only at the base |
Plants that fight wind constantly grow slower and smaller; a good windbreak is worth more to yield than any nutrient. Water moderately — wind dries pots faster than sun, so check daily in a nor'wester. Harvest a few days early rather than lose a plant to a forecast gale.

Frequently asked questions
Which strains cope best with wind?
Compact indica-dominant strains and autoflowers with short internodes and thick stems. Tall sativas suffer most; if you want sativa effects, choose a sativa-leaning hybrid and train it low and wide.
Will wind kill a cannabis plant?
A moderate breeze strengthens stems. Gales snap branches, especially heavy colas late in flower, and constant wind stresses plants and slows growth. Shelter, staking and choosing compact strains prevent most damage.
Can I grow in Wellington's changeable weather?
Yes, and many do. Choose a sheltered north-facing spot, a compact or fast-finishing strain, and plant after Labour Weekend once the southerlies ease. Autoflowers are the safest option on exposed sites.
What's the best windbreak for cannabis?
Something that filters rather than blocks — 50% shade cloth on posts, a hedge, or a trellis. Solid walls create turbulence on the lee side. Place it on the side of the prevailing wind, roughly as tall as the plants and a metre or two upwind.
How should I stake a cannabis plant?
At planting, with a stake taller than the expected final height, driven well into the ground on the windward side. Tie loosely with soft ties every 20 cm as the plant grows, and add a cage or second stake once colas form. Ties that are too tight cut the stem in wind.
Does a cold snap in summer harm plants?
A cold southerly for a day or two stalls growth but doesn't cause lasting damage to established plants. Seedlings and freshly transplanted plants are more vulnerable; cover them overnight. Persistent cold below 10°C at night slows flowering noticeably. ---
