High-yield cannabis seeds in New Zealand
High yield cannabis seeds turn a decent New Zealand season into a heavy one. This range gathers the strains that consistently produce the most flower per plant outdoors and per square metre indoors — vigorous growers with strong branching, big colas and the stamina to keep bulking through a Kiwi summer. Many are sativa-influenced hybrids that use the long days and strong light to build size; there are heavy-yielding indicas here too, for growers who need to stay compact in a windy spot or finish early in the south. Yield is a partnership between genetics and conditions: give these strains good soil, consistent water, shelter and full sun, and they'll deliver the biggest harvests in our catalogue. Each listing shows expected outdoor yield per plant and indoor yield per square metre, plus the plant's structure so you know whether to plan for stakes.

How to choose high yield seeds
Match the yield number to your situation. Outdoor yield per plant assumes a full season in the ground with good sun and shelter; if you're growing in a 30-litre pot on a windy deck, expect a third of that and choose a strain that yields well at smaller sizes — the compact heavy-yielding indicas in this range. Indoor yield per square metre assumes a full canopy under adequate light, so it's a comparison between strains, not a promise. Then check flowering time against your autumn: the heaviest yielders are often sativa-leaning hybrids that flower for 10 or 11 weeks, and a big plant that rots in April yields nothing. In the humid north, look for high-yielders with a mould-resistance note; in sunny Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Nelson and Central Otago, the dense indica hybrids will give the heaviest, most resinous harvests; on the coast, compact and staked beats tall and broken.
Growing for yield in New Zealand
Yield is built in the vegetative stage, and New Zealand's short season makes an early start the single biggest factor. Germinate indoors in early October, pot on once, and get plants into the ground the moment frost risk passes; a plant with an extra three weeks of spring growth is a noticeably bigger plant in March. Give roots room — in the ground or 60-litre-plus pots — and feed for growth through spring. Top once at the fifth or sixth node and use low-stress training to spread the canopy, which also keeps the plant lower and more wind-tolerant.
| Factor | Effect on yield | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Early start | Biggest single factor here | Germinate indoors early October; plant out at first opportunity |
| Root space | Large | In-ground or 60 L+ pots |
| Sun | Large | 8+ hours direct; north-facing |
| Shelter | Large in NZ | Windbreak; a plant fighting wind doesn't bulk |
| Training | Moderate | Top once, LST to widen and lower the canopy |
| Support | Prevents loss | Stake or cage by January; heavy colas snap in an equinox gale |
In flower, switch to a bloom feed with more phosphorus and potassium and less nitrogen. Water deeply and consistently in dry spells; a drought-stressed plant in flower stops bulking. Inspect for rot daily from early March.

Frequently asked questions
How much can one outdoor plant yield in New Zealand?
With a full season from late October in the north, good soil and sun, a high-yielding photoperiod strain can produce several hundred grams of dried flower per plant. Pots, shade, wind exposure and a short southern season all reduce it.
Are high-yield strains harder to grow?
They need more space, water and feeding than compact strains, and almost always need staking in New Zealand wind. The growing isn't harder; the plants are bigger and less forgiving of neglect in flower.
Do high-yield strains take longer to finish?
Often — the biggest yielders tend to be sativa-leaning hybrids with 9 to 11 week flowering times. If autumn rain arrives early where you are, choose a heavy-yielding indica or use the fast-flowering filter.
Does topping increase yield?
Yes, when done early. Topping once at the fifth or sixth node creates two main colas instead of one and encourages a wider, lower canopy with more bud sites in full sun — which also helps in wind. Topping late or repeatedly costs more than it gains.
Should I grow one big plant or several small ones?
Where plant limits apply, one or two big plants given a full season in the ground out-yield several small ones. Where space or wind is the limit, more compact plants filling the area evenly usually win. Match the approach to your constraint.
What's the biggest yield killer in New Zealand?
Two things: wind snapping heavy branches in March, and bud rot in the last three weeks. Stake and cage by January, choose mould-resistant genetics in humid regions, inspect daily from March, and harvest promptly when the forecast turns. ---
