Cannabis seeds for New Zealand beginners
The best cannabis seeds for beginners forgive mistakes: a missed watering, a windy week, a damp March. That's what this range is built on. Every strain here has been chosen for a first New Zealand grow — sturdy genetics, short-to-medium flowering times, and structures that cope with wind, humidity and cool nights. You'll find autoflowers, which are the fastest route to a first harvest and the safest bet in a short season, alongside easy feminised photoperiod strains for growers who want to learn the full cycle from Labour Weekend to autumn. Each listing includes a difficulty rating, expected height and a note on which regions the strain suits, so you're choosing something that works in your part of the country rather than fighting your weather from the first week.

How to choose beginner seeds
Choose the plant that fits your life, not the one with the best reviews. If you want a harvest in three months with minimal decisions, an autoflower is the answer: sow it, water it, harvest it — and in New Zealand it'll be done before the weather turns. If you'd rather learn how the season works and don't mind waiting until late March, an easy feminised photoperiod strain teaches more and yields more, at the cost of some autumn risk. Then match the region tag to where you live — a beginner in Whangārei should grow a different strain from a beginner in Invercargill, and getting that one choice right removes most of the ways a first grow fails. Ignore THC percentages for now; every strain here is potent enough, and you'll get far more from a plant you finish than from a stronger plant you lose to rot in April.
Growing your first plant in New Zealand
The southern-hemisphere calendar is the first thing to internalise, because most of what you'll read online is written for the north. Here, planting out means late October to November, the plant flowers through late summer, and harvest is March to April. Autoflowers ignore all that and finish about ten weeks after sowing.
| Region | Easiest first plant | When to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northland, Auckland, BoP | Mould-resistant autoflower | Mid-October | Harvest by January; a second run is possible |
| Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay | Easy feminised indica-hybrid or auto | Labour Weekend | Feminised harvest late March; auto in ~10 weeks |
| Wellington, Manawatū, Nelson | Compact autoflower; stake it | Early November | Harvest mid-January; shelter from wind |
| Canterbury, Otago, Southland | Autoflower | Mid–late November | Harvest early February in peak sun; frost-free |
Buy a fabric pot of at least 20 litres and quality potting mix (not garden soil). Place the plant where it gets morning sun and shelter from the prevailing wind — behind a fence, hedge or the north wall of the house. Water when the top 5 cm of soil is dry; in a wet spring that may be rarely, and overwatering kills more first plants than anything else. Don't feed for the first three weeks. Stake at planting. Keep a simple journal: date, what you did, what you saw.

Frequently asked questions
Should beginners start with autoflower or feminised seeds?
Autoflowers are the quickest way to a first harvest and forgive timing mistakes, which makes them the safer choice in most of New Zealand. Feminised photoperiod strains take longer but teach you the full seasonal cycle and yield more. Either works; choose by patience and space.
How many plants should a beginner grow?
Two or three. Enough to learn from without being overwhelmed, and within the limits most legalisation models — including the 2020 referendum proposal — have used.
What's the most common beginner mistake?
Overwatering, especially in a wet spring. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, not on a schedule, and use pots with excellent drainage. Fabric pots are ideal in New Zealand's changeable weather.
How much does a first grow cost?
Very little outdoors: seeds, a fabric pot, a bag of quality potting mix, a stake and a small bottle of bloom nutrients. Indoor setups add a tent, light and fan — a bigger investment, and in most of New Zealand a beginner is better off starting outside in summer.
How much will my first plant yield?
An autoflower in a 20-litre pot with good sun and shelter typically produces 30 to 100 grams of dried flower. An easy feminised photoperiod plant given a full season can produce several times that. A first grow usually lands at the lower end; a second doesn't.
Can I grow on a deck or balcony?
Yes, if it gets at least six hours of direct sun and some shelter from wind. Autoflowers and compact indica-dominant strains stay under a metre and suit small spaces. Smell in the last three weeks of flower is the main practical issue; position the plant with that in mind. ---
