Its aromatic profile combines citrus, lemon, sweet and tropical notes, supported by myrcene, limonene and pinene. Growing in New Zealand

Maui Waui is considered an intermediate-level option. Its tropical background can suit warm conditions, while careful planning helps it adapt to hot, dry or temperate settings. New Zealand growers should account for strong regional differences: northern areas may offer a longer warm period, whereas southern or elevated sites can bring cooler nights and a shorter finishing window.

For outdoor schedules, spring planting generally falls between September and November. Choose a position with ample direct sun, airflow and enough room for branching. In humid districts, spacing and regular canopy checks can reduce mould risk. In exposed areas, supports may help maintain structure through wind and late-season weather.

Indoor

Indoors, plants may reach up to 150 cm, so height management is worth planning early. Training and an even canopy can make better use of available light, while selective pruning may improve airflow through dense growth. Stable temperatures, sensible humidity and adequate ventilation are especially useful during flowering.

Container size, soil quality, sun exposure, seasonal temperatures and phenotype can cause substantial variation. Watch moisture levels closely: avoid prolonged saturation in wet regions, while maintaining consistent hydration during hot or windy periods.

Harvest

In New Zealand, the typical outdoor harvest window is March–May. Timing depends on planting date, latitude, phenotype and autumn weather. Monitor floral maturity, aroma development and overall plant condition rather than relying on the calendar alone. As harvest approaches, inspect flowers for excess moisture or mould, particularly after rain and cool nights. Indoor harvest usually follows the estimated 9–11-week flowering period.
