Growing in New Zealand

Critical Jack is considered an intermediate-level option that suits temperate conditions as well as hot, dry environments. In New Zealand, outdoor planting generally aligns with spring from September to November, once conditions are settled and plants can receive long periods of direct light. Regional weather differs considerably, so growers should account for local wind, rain, humidity and temperature swings.

Good airflow and a bright position are particularly useful in wetter districts. In exposed areas, discreet supports can help stabilise branches as flowers gain weight. Regular observation also allows growers to respond to pests, moisture or nutrient imbalance before these issues become established.

Indoor

Indoors, Critical Jack can reach up to 150 cm. Its moderate stretch and branching respond well to canopy management, making height planning important before flowering begins. A consistent light schedule, fresh air exchange and sensible spacing can help maintain an even canopy and reduce the risk of excess humidity around developing flowers.

For New Zealand outdoor gardens, harvest typically falls between March and May. Timing will vary with planting date, latitude, local weather and plant development. Rather than relying on the calendar alone, assess flower maturity, aroma, resin coverage and overall plant condition.
